Wallpaper Trends Winter 2013/14
As the nights get longer and we spend more time indoors, many of us turn those long-planned decorating projects into reality. Wallpaper has made a huge comeback over the last couple of years and the choice of styles is greater than ever. Here are some of the latest trends to help spark your imagination!
Nostalgia – Still at the forefront of present day trends, the Nostalgia trend continues to develop, mixing clever plays on familiar everyday details with the feel of hand-illustrated or photographic images. These are collaged together to represent a personal collective of treasured finds. “Be it memories from a romantic holiday, city escapes or childhood hobbies, there is something for everyone’s personality in this very pictorial design theme”, says Maryanne Carwright, design manager at Muriva.
Natural Materials – “Natural colours and forms are relaxing, comforting and gentle – blurring the divisions between inside and outside”, says Linda Barker, interior designer. The current wallpaper trend is all about woodgrain and warm stone effects, with many new designs not only intended for a solitary feature wall, but to give a “wraparound” effect on three, if not four walls. According to Caroline Johnston, senior designer for John Lewis, these effects are seen mainly in contemporary loft-style schemes, but are now also being mixed with traditional textiles create a fresh take on British heritage style.
Botanical – With a hint of vintage authenticity, floral designs have developed to depict additional depth and detail, seemingly based on archived manuscripts and featuring ornate calligraphy and botanical etchings. “The beautiful theme of nature has inspired art and design since time immemorial”, so Anne Mader, marketing manager at Muriva. “Today botanical wallpapers can include butterflies, birds, insects as well as fauna in a mix of sketches, photographic prints or painterly watercolours.”
Dimensional – “If you feel like making a statement with the geometric trend and want a certain wall in your room to stand out, choose designs with a three-dimensional effect”, says Melanie Griffin, category director for Home at B&Q. Be they coloured or monochrome, these new papers instantly add depth to your walls and update rooms with the feel of stylish, boutique-hotel decor.
